According to The Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) – a charity that works with governments, businesses and communities to improve resource efficiency – approximately £140m worth of clothing goes into landfill each year. Sustainability and sustainable printing seem to be the words on everyone’s lips at the moment, and with good reason. We can all make a difference to the world we live in, and print is no different. As such Societal operates a print on demand service which could be viewed as an eco-friendly practice in and of itself as it is designed to minimize fabric and ink waste. However, lets take a closer look. Print on demand Print on demand is a printing technology and business process in which designs on clothing are not printed until the team at Societal receives an order, allowing prints of single items and or small quantities. The customer prepays and the item is literally made to order – there is no making up of anything that hasn’t been pre-sold. Therefore, Societal does not hold on to any physical inventory. As such Societal doesn’t incur stock holding expenses because we are not charged for the cost of goods until someone places an order. There is an inventory of some “white goods” but not the giant number or pre-printed apparel and home décor items of the traditional model! This model helps reduce warehousing space requirements and inventory carrying costs, as well as reducing the amount of overstock going into landfills. This model is also fast and efficient, fantastically the turnaround from sale-to-delivery of items is usually between 4 to 10 days. An Environmental Friendly Approach Societal also tries to minimize waste in packaging by sourcing recycled or biodegradable packaging materials. Bubble wraps are made from a minimum of 15% recycled plastic and 10% post-consumer content. Kraft tubes are made from 70-100% post-consumer recycled content and 0-30% secondary recycled content. We aim also aiming to develop our product catalog with sustainable clothing in mind in the future. Additionally, the poly bags used are recyclable, low-density polyethylene, FDA and USDA compliant. The printing industry has been focusing on improving its sustainability factor for many years, since traditional print manufacturing requires massive quantities of such vital resources as water and trees. But Societal believes that being sustainable brand is not just a matter of focusing on paper reduction. Focusing on paper is just the obvious, first target for us. Sustainability is a process of continuous improvement and involves a lot more than a printer’s effort to reduce paper and eliminate waste, although in this industry, those are both important initiatives. To this end Societal is merely at the start of its sustainability journey and has a long way to go. From time to time we’ll be blogging about eco friendly printing: what does it really mean? In what ways is Societal and the third-parties we partner with taking care of the environment? Learn all about the useful and achievable methods, processes and techniques. A new world (or “paradigm”) has opened up for digital designers and independent artists. Best thing? It’s much more agile and environmentally sustainable than it ever was before under the traditional model. Certainly, Societal print on demand (POD) ethos is a small part of the sustainable green printing movement. Those days of overprinting should be a thing of the past – which is good for the environment. And even though on-demand production is ahead of the fast fashion brands in terms of sustainability, we don’t want to stop there. That’s why sustainable fashion—a movement that wants to advance the fashion industry towards more ecological processes and social justice—is on Societal’s agenda.
